What’s a theremin? The theremin creates music and sound at a distance, without touch. Moving your hand towards the right antenna plays higher pitched notes and moving towards the left antenna decreases volume. In 1920, an engineer named Leon Theremin invented this unique musical instruments. Since then, it’s been used to create experimental music and eerie sound effects and inspired many electronic musical instruments. Theremins sense capacitance, or how easy it is to store energy between objects in an electric field. By moving your hands closer to the antenna, you increase capacitance. The closer two things are, the more electric fields build up between them. Move your hand away, and the distance will weaken the electric fields and decrease capacitance.
Unlike other theremin DIY kits, the MicroKits theramin instrument has both volume and pitch antennas. It also automatically calibrates to almost any environment, making it easy to start playing.
Building with MicroKits No tools are needed to build MicroKits. Simply place parts in the breadboard to make electrical connections. Because this is not a soldering kit, you can start building circuits right away without first having to learn soldering. The included step by step instructions clearly show where each part goes, with breaks to check your work and learn more about how the circuit you are building works.
Start your journey from beginner to inventor with MicroKits! MicroKits is designed for beginners of any age 10+. MicroKits are great as kids building projects or kids science experiments, as science kits for teens, and as engineering kits or electronic kits for adults.
What’s in the box? Everything you need to build your science kit is included in the box. Yes, including batteries! Each kit includes Micro the microprocessor chip, Tick the timer chip, a speaker, a green LED, two capacitors, 3 resistors, two long copper antennas, a breadboard, a batt
